WP3: Quantification of gross N fluxes in soil-P. lanceolata systems using stable isotope labelling

The aim of WP3 is to investigate the mechanisms through which Plantago lanceolata influences the nitrogen cycle by disentangling direct biological nitrification inhibition (BNI) effects from indirect effects on the N cycle. This will help to deepen our understanding of how P. lanceolata can be used to reduce nitrogen losses in agriculture.
This will be achieved by quantifying gross N fluxes in soil–P. lanceolata systems using 15N stable isotope labelling. Two experimental approaches are included:

  • Lab-scale soil incubations using BNI-active substances and plant material.
  • Microcosm experiments in a greenhouse, where P. lanceolata is grown together with grass and clover.

For data evaluation and modelling, collaboration will take place with Christoph Müller at Justus Liebig University, Giessen, using the Ntrace tool.
